Your Accommodation at The Open House, Parndana is ideally located in the middle of Kangaroo Island. Wildlife can often be seen on road verges in and around Parndana, and in late winter and spring they are covered with Australian native wildflowers. In summer the flowering gums are spectacular.
There are many attractions on Kangaroo Island and we have listed below only a small sample for you. It is best to allow a three day or longer stay on Kangaroo Island if it is possible.

Ideal Day Trip 1
– Flinders Chase
Travel to Parndana Wildlife Park in the morning, about 3km out of Parndana on the Playford Highway, then down to Flinders Chase National Park with a stop off at Roo Lagoon Wood Turning Gallery.
The Flinders Chase Visitor Center at Rocky River, is about 60 km & has a good well stocked cafe for lunch & coffee, or take lunch provisions from the Parndana Bakery or Dave’s Deli for the day. Check your vehicle for fuel and a top up is recommended. No fuel at Flinders Chase.
Visit Admirals Arch at Cape du Couedic, see the Sea lion colony, then Harvey’s Return, and on to the spectacular Remarkable Rocks. This is often enough for some people for a day, however if you started early in the day, you could continue on to Vivonne Bay or Seal Bay. Return to Parndana via The South Coast Road & Playford Highway.
Ideal Day Trip 2
– A Beach Destination – Some Dirt Roads on this trip
Note: Take lunch provisions from the Parndana Bakery or Dave’s Deli for the day.
Travel to Parndana Wildlife Park in the morning, about 3km out of Parndana, then travel further on for about 20km for a stop off at Roo Lagoon Wood Turning Gallery. From Roo Lagoon travel west for a few minutes until you come to Western River Road. Turn right and your onto a dirt road to Western River Cove, which is about 15km. Here you will discover a pristine sandy beach in a sheltered cove. Toilet facilities are here with a shelter shed for cover if you are planning lunch here.
From Western River Cove continue on to return to the North Coast Road and on to Stokes Bay which is approx 25km.
Note: Roads in this part of Kangaroo Island are made from laderite & gravel and speed should be kept to around 60km or even less if you are not experienced in dirt road driving.
Stokes Bay – The hidden sandy beach & rock pool – just 19km from Parndana & Lathami Conservation Park.
If the beach, and an unusual short walk interest you, this would be a good choice. This is also on dirt road.
Stokes Bay can be an ideal place at sunset to spot kangaroos in the wild.
Seal Bay – This is about 30 km in total from The Open House with about 16km on reasonable country unsealed roads. If you prefer to travel on sealed bitumen only then you will travel about 34km via The Playford Highway & the South Coast Road. After visiting Seal Bay, which is best done in the morning, continue on to the much awarded beach at Vivonne Bay. There is a General Store for general supplies at Vivonne Bay & petrol is also available. No LPG.
Full Day Trip
For a full day trip travel to to the small township of American River (57km) then to Penneshaw (39km). A coastal walk at Penneshaw will take several hours to complete if you are keen walker. Penneshaw has most small town facilities with several choices for lunch.
